South-Korean car manufacturer Hyundai has revealed their new design concept ‘Le Fil Rouge’, at the 2018 Geneva International Motor Show and it’s a far cry from what we are used to. Introducing a new design culture and combining expectations of the future, we see elegant sports styling and the latest technology as the company moves forward in a fresh direction.
The design of the vehicle formulates a striking silhouette, which, although futuristic, feels quite natural due to their newly introduced ‘Sensuous Sportiness’ approach, a theme to be embodied by all future Hyundai vehicles, ranging from sedans to SUVs. The idea behind this is to bring instinctive beauty, creating emotional value and desirability in Hyundai vehicles. This is defined by the harmony between four fundamental elements in vehicle design: proportion, architecture, styling, and technology.
“‘Le Fil Rouge’ is a reinterpretation of Hyundai’s design DNA that originated from the brand’s historical Hyundai Coupe Concept in 1974. Building on our long history of creating a distinctive and sporty character in vehicles, we will open a new era for Hyundai design. Our goal is to build a beloved brand by creating vehicles with heightened emotional value to reshape the landscape of car design. This is the foundation of our concept,” added Sang-yup Lee, Vice President and Head of Hyundai Styling.”

With this car, Hyundai adopted a new approach called ‘Light Architecture’, integrating a progressive identity into the brand’s design heritage. ‘Light Architecture generates a dynamic look and forward motion effect for the vehicle. The front and the rear pillars, as well as the roof, are seamlessly blended into the overarching silhouette of the vehicle, as though it is drawn with a single line.’ One of the important design principles was to create a design that enables a seamless experience of function. A two-way air ventilation system that blows air over the curved surface of lightweight tube architecture was inspired by aircraft ventilation.
The car’s interior uses a ‘wrap-around architecture’ emphasizing depth and aiming to create a spacious and comfortable travel environment for passengers. Re-vitalized wood and high tech fabrics are sculpted into the design of the vehicle, taking advantage of the latest in design technology. A striking panoramic ‘floating’ display utilising haptic technology presents the driver with access to an intuitive ‘cockpit’. The most distinguishable design feature is probably the huge cascading grille with parametric jewels, which opens up from the wide, layered front hood. The grill adds a more aggressive touch to the design concept and certainly makes it memorable.
