Scenes don’t come more iconic than the historic Temple of Poseidon in East Attica, Greece. It is believed that it was built in 444 BC by Iktinos, the architect of the Temple of Hephaestus in Athens’ ancient Agora. Standing proudly above the incredible Aegean Sea, the temple is a typical example of a Hexastyle building of the period.
The Temple of Poseidon is just one of the incredible views that are overlooked by the Cape Sounio Resort. With no surprise, the five-star retreat was inspired by ancient Greek architecture and also features sculptures by Constantinos Valaes, one of the most recognised artists in the region. His artworks are strategically placed around the property and include metal olive trees, moulded into various shapes and colours. Beautiful hues of colour surround the resort with its stunning fountains, landscaped grounds, beaches and private pools.
Part of the exclusive Grecotel Group, Cape Sounio offers an assortment of 150 luxurious bungalows and villas. Bungalows are offered in four sizes, all are open plan except the family bungalow which comes with separate bedrooms and the deluxe option includes the choice of a private pool. Villas come in six options from a Deluxe Family Suite to the Honeymoon Villa to the huge Pine Hill Villa which is a 150-square-meter residence that sits amongst 1,000-square-meters of pine forest and landscaped grounds. Views from all involve Sounio National Park, the beautiful Aegean Sea and of course the Temple of Poseidon. Expect a five-star service regardless of your choice of accommodation.
The resort features six restaurants/bars offering traditional Greek cuisine, Asian, seafood, gourmet and international dishes. Another stunning feature is the two secluded beaches that are fully serviced should you require food or drink. Cape Sounio is just one hour from the city centre and the Athenian Riviera. Lovers of history, architecture and art are spoilt for choice. We recommend the Benaki Museum for ancient Greek and Byzantine artwork, plus there is a selection of Chinese artwork exhibited. Also on your list should be the National Archaeological Museum and Museum of Cycladic Art.
