London’s award-winning boutique gym BLOK launched their second gym last month on Curtain Road, in lively Shoreditch. Founders Ed Stanbury, Max Oppenheim, and Reema Stanbury broke into the luxury gym sector in 2016 with their first gym in Clapton, Hackney, which has gone on to have major success. The partners pooled their knowledge of construction, photography and marketing to develop the BLOK concept.
Commenting on why they chose Shoreditch for their 2nd development, Reema Stanbury explains, “Shoreditch was a natural choice for the 2nd BLOK as it is such a key location in London for art, design, fashion and technology allowing us to build on the natural customer base that has developed in Clapton. With a strong emphasis on architecture and design, the Normal Foster development. Principal Place is the perfect location for our second site. BLOK combines fitness with art and design and our gyms are beautiful spaces that you want to spend time in before and after a class. No class is ever the same thanks to the freedom the instructors have to tailor their classes. They are passionate about working at BLOK and that’s what keeps the customers coming back.”
The trio collaborated on the design again with the award-winning teams of Daytrip and There’s Light. The Shoreditch site enjoys the sleek aesthetic of the Norman Foster-designed exterior with a synchronous interior that takes full advantage of the available natural light and light technology to create the perfect environment for fitness enthusiasts and beginners alike. BLOK’s unique angle is to operate a client space more commonly associated with the luxury retail and hotel sector. Central to the exceptional design is a first class service, with a focus on ‘a variety of original classes and workshops to challenge all levels of fitness enthusiasts’. Expect over 25 classes ranging between £10- £17 per class.
Understanding the value of collaborations, BLOK is working with Essence, a visionary plant-based brand created by chef Matthew Kenney and entrepreneur Bart Roman, offering bespoke nutritional advice and produce in their retail space that also includes a 60-seater cafe and a gallery. In the store, you will be able to purchase and learn about the most innovative technical sportswear on the market, where brands will roll on a monthly basis and include Charlie Cohen, DKNY Sport and Monreal amongst others.
