On International Women’s Day 2024, Leica Camera unveiled the powerful works of four extraordinary photographers, marking the pinnacle of the 5th Annual Leica Women Foto Project Award. Under the theme “Perspective is Power,” this year’s award invited talented women photographers to explore themes of resilience, reclamation, and rebirth, celebrating the uniquely feminine perspective within visual storytelling. **Top banner image by Luvia Lazo.
The Winners:
Camille Ferrah Lenain (France/Algeria/USA)
A master of documentary and portraiture, Lenain’s “Made of Smokeless Fire” delves into the lives of the LGBTQIA+ community within Muslim culture in France. Her lens fosters understanding and challenges stereotypes.
Dola Posh (UK/Nigeria)
With “OMO MI” (“My Child”), Posh explores the complexities of motherhood and postpartum depression through a Black woman’s lens. Themes of self-discovery and feminine strength resonate powerfully throughout this series.
Luvia Lazo (Mexico)
An indigenous Zapotec photographer, Lazo’s “Women from the Clouds” weaves a visual narrative of contemporary indigenous women of diverse ages and experiences, adding depth and richness to our understanding of womanhood.
Stasia Schmidt (Canada)
“Ephemerality” confronts societal norms by placing a feminine presence within traditionally male-dominated adventure spaces. Her work blends surrealism and stark realities to challenge viewers’ preconceived notions.
Each winner embodies the spirit of the Leica Women Foto Project, demonstrating the power of photography to illuminate diverse perspectives and experiences. They receive a Leica SL3 camera, a Vario-Elmarit-SL 24-70mm f/2.8 ASPH lens, and a cash prize of $10,000 USD to support their artistic endeavours.
A Legacy of Empowerment
Since 2019, the Leica Women Foto Project has fostered a global community of women photographers. Leica’s commitment to diversity and inclusion aligns with its support for organizations like Women Photograph, Photoville, Las Fotos Project, and the ConnectHer Film Festival. Beyond the monetary award, Leica helps amplify the voices of these remarkable women in visual storytelling.
Festival and Beyond: Expanding the Conversation
The award winners will be showcased in a three-day festival from April 12th-14th, 2024, at Artspace PS109 on 215 E 99th Street, New York City, in collaboration with Women Street Photographers. This celebration is a testament to the enduring power of photography to ignite conversations and broaden horizons.
