Situated in Rome’s historic Regola district, a place overflowing with Renaissance architecture and cobblestone streets, sits Chapter Roma, part of the prestigious Design Hotels™ collection. The swish boutique hotel opened in May 2019 and was designed by renowned South African designer Tristan du Plessis. This is the first location developed as part of the Chapter Italia Portfolio, created by Marco Cilia (formerly of Hotel Americano in New York City).
Vibrant Regola runs along the Tiber River, Italy’s third-longest river and the charming streets are full of art galleries, vintage boutiques, markets and bistro’s. The hotel is based on Via di Santa Maria dei Calderari, or the “street of the blacksmiths”, and Du Plessis pays homage with his use of metals throughout the property.
The building dates back to 1880 and Du Plessis has demonstrated again, his ability to fuse hard-nosed industrial-chic with deluxe minimalist fittings that connect splendidly with the history of the building and locale. Rooms are spacious yet compact, swanky yet functional.
The 42 rooms boast exposed brick, raw steel, brass and copper fittings with midcentury Italian furniture, herringbone floors, handmade rugs and Emerald-green velvet upholstery. Fixtures and fittings from Tom Dixon, Moroso & Diesel, Seletti and Bert Frank sit alongside custom furniture designed and produced by local artisans. In lofts and suites, guests enjoy a separate lounge, private bar and Marshall sound systems.
From the original building, we recognise neoclassical themes like the tall interior arches and vaulted ceilings. In public areas, guests can enjoy classic and contemporary art by artists that include Alice Pasquini, Warios, Cyrcle and Willy Verginer plus regular splashes of graffiti.
Chapter Lobby Bar is a hub for guests and locals alike, with coffee, juices and smoothies on offer throughout the day. Later this summer, the hotel will launch Market, an informal deli/bistro offering a curated selection of organic Italian produce, and the property will also see the opening of a restaurant by the end of 2019.
